In the Midst of the Storm

John 6: 16-21

“Then they willingly received Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land where they were going.” John 6:21

I remember the day my son and grandson brought over a torn canvas off their sailboat to repair. We ordered the thread and needles needed, but not knowing how actually to sew it, I prayed. Looking at the sailcloth I noticed all kinds of stains and places battered by the wind and sun. The sail cloth reminded me of how we set sail in Christ, but because of life’s storms, we too become battered and tattered, and torn by abuse. But we have God’s Holy Spirit who is always present to mend our ways, and so we can set sail again, and again. (Psalm 46:1)
It also occurred to me that without the wind the sails on our boat go limp, and we lay stagnant, unable to move, going absolutely nowhere. Unless we head into the wind our sails have no power to move us along. Heading into the wind our sails receive the power to move us across the vast oceans of rough weather. The Peace He gives is like smooth sailing and protection within our hearts. He will not depart.
Persistence in faith is like that sailboat moving forward into the headwind, not going the opposite way. We are never alone, but like Christ’s disciples, we must see Christ in the midst and invite Him into our boat.
We will not always have smooth sailing, and it is impossible to avoid the storms, but with Jesus alongside us, we are assured of crossing over the horizon, into eternal life, into His Arms.

“As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him.”  1 John 2:27
