Whenever Jesus Joins Our Conversation

Conversation
“And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” Hebrews 10:24-25

One of my favorite chapters in the Bible is Luke 24. It tells the story of Jesus appearing to two of His disciples on the day of His resurrection. The two were perplexed, confused, and discouraged concerning the crucifixion and were discussing it on their way to Emmaus. Suddenly, Jesus, whom they did not recognize, joined them and asked what they were talking about. As they poured out their grief and disappointment, Jesus began to expound the scriptures explaining why the Messiah had to suffer, die, and on the third day rise from the dead. He admonished them for not remembering; He had told them these things while He was with them before His death.

This reminds me of what happens when I meet with my friend. On these occasions, we will meet for lunch or coffee and discuss the topic of the day. But before we start any discussion, we remember to thank the Lord for our time together and invite Him to join us. Sometimes we share our personal trials, disappointments, frustrations, and the latest world crisis. The mood will darken as we try desperately to analyze the state of affairs. Then suddenly, the discussion takes a radical right turn as scriptures begin to permeate our minds.

We are always amazed at how, in the midst of a perplexing conversation, the Lord is always faithful to join us with His Word. When we allow Jesus to break in on our conversation, He is ready to break open the scriptures, as we break bread, illuminating our perspective until it becomes His.

Before we know it, the minutes have turned into hours, and it’s time to go our way, with our hearts at peace and joyful with the love He shared that day. (Luke 24:32)

“They asked each other,“Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”
