Context: Matthew 26
Focus: Matthew 26: 20-25

“Judas, the one who would betray Him, also asked, “Rabbi, am I the one?
And Jesus told him, You have said it.”
Matthew 26:25

When it was evening, Jesus reclined at the table with the twelve, and while they were eating, Jesus told them one of them would betray Him. This caused them great distress and so they each addressed Him as Lord, asking,  “Am I the one”. He then explained what the scriptures have declared, long ago, will happen,  the Son must die.
He identified the betrayer as the one who would dip his bread with Him in the same bowl. Jesus then said, “But how terrible it will be for the one who betrays Him, for it would have been far better if the one who betrays Him were never born.”  Then Judas addressing Him, not as Lord, but as “Rabbi”, also asked , “Am I the one?”, and Jesus replied,
“You have said it.” ( my emphasis)

Sometimes, by what we say or ask we reveal what is truly in our heart.  It is interesting to note there was a time the disciples would address Jesus as Rabbi. However, after three years of hearing Him teach, preach and perform miraculous signs, they developed an intimacy with Him which opened their eyes to the Truth. He was indeed the Messiah, the Son of God,  the One whom God sent.  So they recognized Him, not as a teacher but their “Lord”. However,  it was different with Judas, who still referred to Him as only Rabbi.

Judas did not recognize Him as the one whom God sent, but rather a person of great influence whom he could use for his unscrupulous worldly pursuits.
And after Judas asked the deceptive question, he received from the hand of Jesus the bread, and brought condemnation upon himself.

My Prayer: Lord, unless we come to you with a sincere heart we are deceived in not recognizing, you are the only One Whom the Father has sent. I,  thank you Lord, you are not only my Savior but you have become my Lord, and the only one whom I look to in directing my life.
