The Rescuer

Isaiah 53

Rescue – “to free or deliver from confinement, violence, danger, or evil”

“Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword. Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels? But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?”Matthew 26:52-56

In the above scripture, Jesus is telling his disciple Peter, He has no need of his rescue, but rather Peter is in need of His.  Jesus was hours away from laying down His life to rescue everyone who would take hold of the Truth, and surrender to God’s way of salvation. Jesus had two options; escape from the Father’s rescue mission or surrender to the Father’s will. His escape would terminate any hope for our salvation and seal the fate for our destruction. For God is Holy, and sin has no place in His presence, and there is no escape from His wrath except through Jesus.

“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”  Romans 6:23

They say in order to save a drowning person, you either throw out something he can hold unto, or you jump into the water and pull him to shore. Either way, the drowning person has to do something in order to be saved. In the first case, he must grab hold onto the hand or thing reaching out to him. In the second case, he must give up the struggle, and surrender to the one who is pulling him to shore.

Jesus plunged into the depth of all our sin to rescue us from eternal death, and in the process, gave up His life in return. But He overcame death by His sacrifice and walked out of the tomb in victory. His death means the guarantee of sins forgiven, His resurrection eternal life secured.

“And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.” Ephesians 1:13

Jesus rescued Peter in the midst of his doubts and fear.  ( Matthew 14:22-33 )

“ But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8
